A Servant of God
Dr. Vernon D. Shelton, Sr.
is a native of Baltimore, MD. He attended Coppin State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. An avid athlete, Shelton played for Coppin’s baseball team under former Orioles center fielder Paul Blair; and eventually, he went on to play semi-pro baseball in the state of Maryland. Dr. Shelton earned a Master’s of Divinity degree at The Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University Seminary. In June of 2012 Dr. Shelton earned his Doctorate of Ministry degree from the United Theological Seminary, in Dayton Ohio.
He received and accepted the call to the
preaching ministry on March 1, 2002 at Jerusalem Baptist Church under the
leadership of Pastor Mamie Cooley. He later served as Youth Pastor at the New
Bethlehem Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Anthony M. Chandler, Sr. Four
years later he was called to pastor his first church, The New Hope Christian
Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. He served as the senior pastor of New
Hope from 2006 to 2010. On September 19, 2010 Dr. Shelton was installed as the tenth
pastor of the Holy Trinity Baptist Church in Amityville, NY.
During the first year of Dr. Shelton’s arrival, Holy Trinity experienced significant growth, spiritually and numerically. God has blessed Holy Trinity under Dr. Shelton’s leadership to add an 8am morning worship service. In just six years of pastoring Holy Trinity Dr. Shelton has led the congregation in numerous Capital Campaigns; which they successfully raised money to complete major renovations to the sanctuary and fellowship hall, install a new parking lot and renovate the church annex.
Dr. Shelton is the proud author of two books entitled, “Picking Up The Pieces and Changing The Way We Do Church.” He serves as the President of Eastern Baptist Association Congress of Christian Education. He also serves as the area Vice-President for the Empire State Convention Congress of Christian Education. Dr. Shelton serves as a writer for the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education Study Guide. He is a federally certified Chaplain, and very active in the community. He is a firm believer that every aspect of life and ministry should be done in excellence. His favorite motto is“excellence is not the standard, but the minimum.” He is a devoted husband to his wife, LaPrena, and the proud father of Terrance, Monique, Myriah (stepdaughter), Ayona, and Vernon, Jr. He is the proud grandfather of his grandson Amari.
